People, when they start writing with a flow of words, sometimes feel they have become very professional in their essay writing. However, the situation is not always like that. If not bigger issues, even very minor corrections can make the whole debate or essay incoherent and absurd and at times, it all makes no sense to the reader. Intersentential along with intrasentential coherence plays a very significant role in the effective development of an argument or debate in an essay.
Writing is a compulsory part of every field. To convey your thoughts, ideas, and views, one must have basic skills for writing effectively. From early stages in our academic career, we learn basic essay writing techniques to convey our ideas through our words in our text as student writers, but as soon as we get away from such writing activities, we forget even the basic steps. If I were asked to write my essay with a given topic, given that it’s been years since I have written a proper essay, I would definitely fail!
Proficiency in any text often comes when we have the coherence and link between our argument, claim, and evidence that supports the thesis statement well and effectively. To get proficiency in an argument, we must know how to link paragraphs, so that readers can easily grasp the idea. Smooth reading with interesting information always helps the reader to concentrate on the essay. While, unarranged ideas with run on sentences only confuse the reader and make him lose his interest and understanding of the document.
If you, as a beginner essay writer, have been assigned to write an essay and you do not have much experience as to how to maintain the coherence and link between the paragraphs and essay argument, we are here to help! I have chosen some basic parts and key elements that you should keep in your head while you try to write your best coherent and perfect essay!
Introduction and thesis
Introduction works the same way to your essay just as a starter works for your 3-course meal. If you have developed the interest of your reader by beginning through an interestingly relevant hook statement, taking up to the general statement, and describing the main crux of your essay through your thesis statement, you can make the reader not lose their interest in the essay. That is how important a coherent introduction is to an essay!
Ideas in the introduction are supposed to be very clear and brief. You better start your introduction by telling your readers how an elucidate argument and paragraphs set must be placed, by also giving your audience the mind map of your idea in the first paragraph. For example, if you are working on an essay like ‘Today Politics’, you must begin with questioning “politics”. Further, you can get along with the topic sentence like ‘politics or monopoly in the contemporary era.
Today’s politics must come later in the paragraph discussion. You must begin the paragraph by explaining the current situation of politics, happenings, main headlines, politician’s moto’s, etc. Moving the discussion, you must extend your argument to highlight the gap in contemporary politics. The gaps are supposed to be discussed in detail in the further paragraphs by taking different authentic sources with proper in-text citations and efficient coherence.
